The Amiga seemed to be a format that, like most others, had its fair share of absolute stinkers when it came to the movie tie-in. It has been the case since the 2600 with the now folklore induced ET, right up to Jumper on the 360. The 16 bit Commodore though also seemed to get a decent share of very good film based titles, like Judge Dredd, Lethal Weapon and the Addams Family (which is also in the top 50)
Alien 3 managed to take what was a reasonably liked addition to its franchise and turn it into a very playable game, with Probe’s help. The best thing was the gameplay, which was kept to a simple premise, but because of that added danger called a time limit, things became even more heated.
You played as Ripley and your task was to rescue the prison inmates, if memory of the movie serves me right anyway, from the clutches of the evil creatures. It looked nice and bore all the hallmarks of the movie, with eerie corridors and sinister looking aliens, but the one thing that stood out more than anything was the grenade launcher. That THWUMP which would echo out of your portable brought much loved joy and satisfaction to us merry band of ass kicking teenagers (again back in the day, unfortunately)
Best thing is it still plays rather nice today. It has shown age a little more than others, but the core rescue element remains intact and could well keep anyone occupied for a little while. I’d reckon it could show some of those Xbox Live Indie people a few guiding instructions on how to properly make something easy to play, but harder to master. It is good, slime induced fun and that’s good enough for me
Besides, in space, no-one can hear your microswitches…
