A KNIGHT WITH ARTHUR
A journey through the whole of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts!

Posted by bedroomcoder on Jun 26, 2010 17:15 (Jun 26, 2010 17:15)

If you haven't heard of Capcom's seminal Ghouls 'n Ghosts franchise, you have probably spent the last 20 years in a cave somewhere.

Recognised by many as one of the hardest games in existence, it is also one of the most imaginative, and the most beautiful. So, without further ado, let's delve into the world of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts!

So - why are we here? Well - the backstory is simple. Evil demons snatch princess. Arthur go bash demons. You start off in an eerie graveyard...

Zombies are rising up from beneath you!

Flaming bony monstrosities spew fire at you, and a wolf lurks, ready to strike.

When you are hit, your armour breaks, leaving Arthur in a fetching pair of heart-bedecked boxers. By the way, leave the firebomb weapon - it's crap.

A bit later, after a really easy boss fight and an ugly and stupidly unfair ghost-ship section, you find yourself out on the high seas on a raft.

What's that in the distance?

Oh Jesus! KILL IT! KILL IT!

Arthur is cursed by a wizard and turned into a baby, at a really bad moment.

The Kraken - the boss of level 2. He's a pain in the arse, especially with the pointy turnip-like missiles he fires. Once you kill him, you go through the waterfall and enter hell...

You know, it's a shame, as the first level is actually disporportionately hard, as the difficulty drops for a few levels afterwards, before becoming almost insurmountable. This means that many people get put off before they can really get into the game.

I know all the GnGs were on the Capcom Classics collection for PS2/PSP, but I don't know about the PS1, sorry.

I agree with Boyo - it is just too hard for me. I am pretty sure I have it on a PS1 retro collection. I think it was on Capcom Generations?

I prefer the sprites over the 3D PSP characters. Limbering myself up for a go on the Mega Drive version next, which is completely different.

I do love these games, it has to be said...

I liked the version they released for the PSP - very pretty but again very hard.

It's a savage game, made all the more savage by the fact that when you have to redo the game with the bracelet, it notches up to the next difficulty level. It's also such a shame, as the insane difficulty means that many people haven't even seen the later stages.

God only knows why you need to complete the game twice - whose idea was that? I need to know so I can hunt him down and kill him slowly...

See I always found this game too hard so never really stuck at it and therefore never got that far into the game. I can honestly say that I have never seen most of the images above in the game
