5 Secret of Evermore
Cruelly mocked and disregarded as an inferior game to Secret of Mana when released (partly due to its Western heritage, it being the first game made by Square's Chicago team), this game is a charming little action RPG that is well worth your time. Deep, enjoyable and rewarding in equal measure.
4 Castlevania 4 (Super Castlevania)
A remake of the original Castlevania, this is one remake that improves on its original. Featuring some of the best music on any 16 bit system, and a harcore challenge worthy of its illustrious forebears, this is a game well worth playing if you are up to the challenge.
3 Super Metroid
One of the deepest and most atmospheric games on the SNES, the opening still brings shivers to our spines. Great boss battles, memorable locations and a hot lead character - what more could you ask for? Castelvania: Symphony of the Night would imitate the open-ended gameplay later, but this game does it better.
2 Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past
This game could have made it into the top 10 purely on the strength of its story, but the sublime and many-layered gameplay is what makes it so special. Adding levels of complexity to the action RPG template, it's a beast of an adventure so make sure you pack yourself some sandwiches before you set out, OK?

It is a complete mystery to me what people see in Castlevania (in at no. 4 here) games. I have tried a few and they just seem like a 4 direction version of Green Beret to me. They don't look bad, they just don't look like anything special.
I would have included Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island, and Street Fighter 2 in this list but the top 3 games chosen are pretty much indisputable.
