Only a select few have been immortalised in pixels. Violet Berlin is one of them. From co-hosting Bad Influence to reviewing games to appearing as a character in Micro Machines 2, you’ll know Violet. And she’s a huge sci-fi fan.
RF : So what’s your favourite sci-fi-type game? Violet Berlin :Too many - Turrican, Super Metroid, Gradius and also Parodius, Flashback (people talked about it as the sequel to Another World, but it wasn't, it was heaps better and completely different).
RF : So how about movies? An equally difficult question? VB : The last Star Trek was more than I could possibly have hoped for. Oh, and I loved Galaxy Quest. The Matrix was full of old ideas and cornily done. Robocop is awesome. The Fifth Element - you must say I like that too! RF : Star Wars? VB : I wasn't allowed to watch Star Wars as a child, so I never got into that (go on, gasp). I had played loads of Star Wars video games before I ever saw a Star Wars movie. My mate Steve (who was associate producer on Bad Influence) one day just forced me to come round his house and watch Star Wars (the original, first ever one) on his new projection TV. And at the end he looked at me like, “What did you think of it?” And all I could think was "Yeah, it all happens just like the video games."
RF : Books? VB : "Oryx and Crake" by Margaret Attwood. It builds a world that is utterly plausible, and the characters are believable in a way that makes you realise that most books are just books and "Oryx and Crake" is a history written from a parallel Universe. It is a historical document. It must be. Chilling. RF: So finally, we have to ask about Micro Machines 2. VB : I just got asked to do it by Codemasters, who made the game. I loved Micro Machines 1, so I said yes, but I wanted to be the fastest A.I. driver (well, you would, wouldn't you!), but they said that Spider had to be… I was a bit miffed to have to come second to a boy (albeit pixels only). They did the picture and animation from (my) photo. I didn't know that they'd make me do those winning and losing moves until I sat down and played the game. It was hilarious.
