5 - Spriggan
Considering the limitations of the PC-Engine, this game is utterly astounding. A brutal and gorgeous blaster, with an interesting and very deep powerup structure - there are 4 colours of powerup, but you can combine any 3 you want at one time. And the bosses are huge, articualted and brilliant.
4 - DoDonPachi
A totally crazy arcade SHMUP from Cave, featuring huge bosses, great graphics and a brilliant scoring system that forces the player to balance risk and reward. Be warned - this one is seriously tough.
3 - Axelay
Amazingly this SNES game didn't sell when originally released. The few people who DID snag themselves a copy got the best SHMUP available for the SNES. The game truly shows what the SNES was capable of doing, with some awesome visual effects (the ship coming out of the sea, anyone?) and the gameplay matched that, with an innovative arsenal and variety coming in the shifts between vertical and horizontal scrolling action.
2 - M.U.S.H.A
If you've got the reflexes of a bloated sloth, stay well clear of this game. A brilliant SHMUP for the Megadrive/Genesis, it's also viciously hard and requires fast fingers and a good memory if you want to get anywhere. On the other hand it offers a great power-up system and some truly great boss fights.
1 - Radiant Silvergun
Treasure's classic SHMUP is an absolute must for the top spot. Featuring smooth and precise controls, bonuses for chain-killing your enemies, huge bosses and totally insane action, if you're a harcode SHMUP nut then you need this in your life.
Nice list mate! Can't say I agree or disagree with it really since I haven't played half of them, mainly because it would cost a fortune to do so! Most of my shmup gaming was restricted to earlier consoles than this anyway, but I'd certainly like to play the oft-mentioned classics like Silvergun, DoDonPachi, et al. I think you overrated Musha a bit but I always like to see a good list!
