| Good Vibrations (Music in Retro titles) |
|
The snatches of audio which would make us smile or even nod our heads & tap our fingers in rhythm while we played away at our favorite video games, still never fail to be hummed all o' these years later. I have to name my Top 5 musical moments in gaming (in no order of prefernce). 1) Upon completion of the 'Challenge Round' in 'Galaga' on the arcade is the release of a short but sweet ditty, an echoing, etheral & brighter effort than the (same) opening level tune. 2) When the NES gave us the sequel to 'Castlevania', 'Simons Quest', it also gave us a fantastic score to whip our hero through the darkness and into the light. A brilliant, dynamic tune to back up a great game. 3) Now all you R.F pilgrims will know by now that I seem a little biased toward 'Wonderboy III; The Dragons Trap' on the Master System... but I will have to say that composer/programmer, Shinichi Sakamoto had the genius to come up with the 'Sidecrawler Dance'. Truly amazing. 4) Super Thunderblade (Arcade/Megadrive), one can only hear this absolutely beautiful tune as we tap in our initials up on the Highscore screen. After such a violent end crashing in flames, in to the scenery we are greeted with the most calming music I have heard in a video game which ultimately, makes everything so much better... 5) 'Robocop' on the CPC 464 had it's musical moment with this creepy, almost early John Carpenter style groove, on the title screen. This was used also in an advertisment for 'Ariston' appliances. Class, as this kinda made up for the dissapointment of seeing Ed-209 when we confronted him. Carry on guys, what are your favorites? |

Oh, I also have to mention the excellent and simply titled 'Old Map' from the Arcade/Megadrive release of 'Golden Axe'. Also at the beginning of that game (Arcade) when the villager is being booted, it sounds very much like a sample from the 'First Blood' when that nasty Deputy falls from the helicopter(?), I always remember that from the ol' arcades? |
