| Game Of The Year - Retro Fusion style |
|
A week or so ago it was that time of the year when magazines and web sites try to pick the game of the year and it struck me that it may not be truly obvious what was really the game of the year at the time but more easy to see in retrospect. How many people noticed Tetris in 1984? It wouldn't have won any prizes then but would likely win in a poll for that year now.
So, what have been the games of yesteryear? Here is my attempt to compile a list, compiled over the last week, and I would welcome any comments.
1978 Space Invaders 1979 Asteroids 1980 Pac Man 1981 Donkey Kong 1982 Pole Position 1983 Chuckie Egg 1984 Tetris 1985 Super Mario Bros 1986 Out Run 1987 R-Type 1988 Super Mario Bros 3 1989 Sim City 1990 Super Mario World 1991 Street Fighter II 1992 Super Mario Kart 1993 Doom 1994 Sensible World Of Soccer 1995 Worms 1996 Mario 64 1997 Gran Turismo 1998 Metal Gear Solid / The Legend Of Zelda - Ocarina Of Time / Half Life 1999 Everquest 2000 Diablo II 2001 Halo: Combat Evolved 2002 Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind 2003 2004 World Of Warcraft 2005 2006 Wii Sports
1998 looks like a particularly good year for games as I couldn't decide between the 3 listed.
1983 was a poor year for every machine except the ZX Spectrum it seemed to me when looking into it, probably because it is regarded as the year of 'the great video game crash' in the USA.
I couldn't really find anything outstanding for 2003 or 2005.
I stopped at 2006 as it was starting to get too recent. What do you think? Can you think of an amazing game not on my list that is more worthy of the 'Game Of The Year' title than the game I picked?

2003 - Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic or Call of Duty or Max Payne 2 or Prince of Perisa: Sands of Time or...?
2005 - Psychonauts, Battlefield 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Guitar Hero?
I'm sure that there's more notable titles for 2003; but KOTOR was pretty solid - 2005 has the birth of Guitar Hero! Plus the lovely Shadow of Collossus (although it's PAL release was 2006...)
1997 - either Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter or Goldeneye on the N64... Nobody really likes racing photo-realistic cars around tracks at realistic speeds...
Don't want to be too picky as to draw up a list like this must have taken some effort, and it'll take some counter-effort from me to look into what was released when and ponder upon what I preferred. |

I think with any list of 'Games of the Year' you will have disagreements - it depends if it's personal or for technical reasons that you're picking the games.
I will concede that GT did a lot for the racing genre, but it just wasn't my personal favourite for the year - the graphics were sublime though.
Agree with your choices for 2003 and 2005 out of the games I listed; even though I find GH games a bit dull unless you're having a laugh with friends (otherwise it's just pressing the colour coded button at the right time... snore...)
1983? Fond memories of Chuckie Egg - same year as Manic Miner though surely? A game of legend... Also Mario Bros. first appeared this year, and Dragon's Lair (although not a great game it was the first of its kind).
1992 - Mario Kart did have a big impact, but this is the same year that Mortal Kombat came out, also Wolfenstein 3D and the beginning of the Championship Manager series... So it depends on why we're listing these games again, and even then personal viewpoints would mean we'd more than likely differ on certain years.
2002 - Battlefield 1942... surely? (or Legend of Zelda, or Animal Crossing)
I could take days over each year to be honest with you.... |

Thanks again. I know it is just opinions, but the nerd in me finds this kind of stuff fun and I think there is probably some general consensus on some years, especially the early ones. With later eras it is not every year that a game comes along and makes a massive impression on gaming.
Yes, I now think 1983 should definitely be Dragons Lair. It was a bit of a dead end as far as video game history goes but it looked stunning to everyone who saw it at the time, a real head turner. It could be said to be the first massively successful game that was entirely style over content.
1992, yes some good alternatives there, equally as good as Mario Kart. A difficult year to pin down to one game, but I would probably not pick MK since it never really reached the same level of sophistication as Street Fighter 2 from the previous year.
2002, I have to confess I have never heard of Battlefield 1942. I have never played Morrowind either, but I love Oblivion and understand from friends of mine that Morrowind is the big breakthrough title in the series. So, my choice for this year is on a pretty weak basis. |

Crikey Whizz - this is well in depth and a lot of time has gone into this.
Memorable games for me, and I would need to check the years for each of these are:
Manic Miner Scramble Command and Conquor Command and Conquor : Generals Doom Quake Diddy Kong Racing Star Wars (Cockpit version) Call of Duty (PC original) Dungeon Keeper (PC) Screamer (PC) Super Mario 64 Starglider (Amiga) Ridge Racer (PSX) Halo Sensible World of Soccer (Amiga) Sonic

Never played Battlefield 1942? It's legendary! I think it was the first online MP game that allowed you to control tanks, planes, jeeps as well as being on foot - it was great, great, fun...
I should state that I hated Dragons Lair; it deserves an entry - but I hated it, anyone who has played the game will know why - as you say style over substance.
Agree that GTA 3 should be mentioned; Halo did make quite an impact but I was never a fan of the series.
On 1984 and Tetris; whilst I don't disagree - it was also the same year that Elite first appeared, certainly another all time classic.
1988 - Ghouls 'n Ghosts; Laser Squad... |
