| Re: Wii - Homebrew |

I really like the Wii operating system interface - it is the XBox 360 one I find "clunky".
The Homebrew Browser is an essential app once you have the homebrew channel. It lets you browse what emulators/demos/games/applications are available and you can download and install them straight to your SD card.
If you get the USB IOS working the WiiMC is definately worth getting - it is a media player for the Wii. I have loads of childrens stuff on my 500GB hard drive for my 2 year old daughter to watch and I also sometimes download UK tv on to it for me.
Another bonus of getting the USB hard drive working is that you can install your games on to it and so no longer need to bother with discs (or even buying the game if you are piracy inclined).
The N64 and PS1 emulators are great on some games and unplayable on others. For the N64 i have found Zelda 64, F-Zero 64, and Mario 64 all play perfectly. I have only tried 3 PS1 images (due to their size) and Gran Turismo was the only one that worked but it was perfect and probably looked better than on an actual PS1.
The Spectrum emulator has great/perfect emulation but the interface is a real pain and it takes quite some effort to map your keys to your Wiimote so you can actually play a game. A USB keyboard is a better option but you have to connect it to the Wii after the emulator has launched each time, you can not just leave it plugged in. This bug wasn't in the first few releases of the emulator but is in the latest one.
SNES, GBA, Mega Drive, Gameboy, PC Engine are all emulated perfectly and GBA games in particular are great to play as they look surprisingly good on a large screen and are often a bit better than SNES stuff.
I am really into playing the homebrew GBA version of Elite by Quirky on the Wii. It is based on the original BBC Model B code but graphics are GBA quality and an interface similar to the NES version has been added. There are 2 versions available - Elite: A New Kind and Elite: AGB. The first is mostly true to the original but the second has more ships (for you to buy), missions, cargo, weapons, special delivery, everything really, but is a bit harder due to you starting with a very crummy ship with little firepower or speed. |
