Having got a couple of bargains at the boot sales recently, I thought I'd see what luck others have been having. I'll start with mine:
Boxed Mega CD 2 (with Mega Drive 2) for £20. Came with an unboxed Sega Arcade Classics disc. Was missing a power cable (both units require separate power) but I picked one up cheap on eBay. It's tested working, which is a bonus.
Unboxed Saturn, with 2 modification switches for £7. Came with one controller and the power lead. I had to track down an RF cable on eBay, as well as a lithium battery for inside the console, which takes care of the system clock and game saves. Luckily these were only cheap, so my total expenditure was around a tenner. It's tested working, just need to get some games and exploit the mod switches... I assume one is to toggle between 50 and 60 Hz and the other to switch region?
Increasingly I'm finding it more fun to stumble upon gaming bargains at car boot sales than to target specific games/consoles on eBay. Pretty much everything you want is on eBay, so where's the fun of just buying it there? I'd rather be patient and find a bargain the old fashioned way.
A few of issues ago some guy wrote in to ONM that at a car bootsale he found a vitural boy for 30quid he didnt buy it though. He saved himself alot of headachs.
I don't really have a clue about Saturn games to be honest... I was just going to wait to see if I saw any that caught my eye! Do you have any recommendations?
I got my Saturn many years after its day and just picked up cheap games when I saw them, like you say. The best Saturn games are really rare and cost a lot (e.g. Panzer Dragoon Saga and Radiant Silvergun) so I don't have these.
Many Saturn games are also v early playstation games and do not look good today. However, the ones I have which I would recommend are Tempest 2000, Tomb Raider, Duke Nukem 3d (both better than PS1 versions), and Nights Into Dreams (difficult but v good if you can get into it).
Well I picked up Thunderhawk for the Saturn from a local game shop but not sure what to think of it really! It's quite difficult but I may give it a second chance.
There wasn't that much at my local car boot this week, but I did get God of War (PS2) for £4, Sonic 2 and Road Rash 2 (Mega Drive) for £2 each and Mega Drive Ultimate Collection (PS3) for £5, which I was quite chuffed with.
At the carboot sales in Aberdeen you will never find retro stuff. Everybody here believe that these old games are worth lots. Thing is, most arent even worth the sticker price they cost when they came out. Uusally £39.99 and 344.99
