When my Grandad passed away a few years ago, I went up in the attic to clear out some stuff and found a box of my cold Matchbox and Corgi cars. I thought I would keep them safe thinking they would be worth something, being 30-something years old.
A quick look on the bay recently proved they had no value, so I gave them to my 3 year old son to play. To see my boy playing with the cars I had as a kid is somewhat strange, but totally right. Got some great cars there - will take a picture and post shortly.
Not really a collector but I still have most of my Matchbox, Corgi, Dinky and Hotwheels cars in the attic, some are still in the official Matchbox carry case that they brought out in the early 70s.
Saying about them not being worth much, I was recently quite shocked. I had noticed a chap going through the boxes of tatty kids toys in the local charity shops picking out the cars but figured he was a collector of some sort. Imagine my surprise when a new 'collectables' shop opened up on the main road near where I live and in the window were the cars I had seen the bloke buying for 20p each except they were now £5 each. Imagine my further surprise when I realised that the bloke was the owner of the shop.
He seems to be going round the shops buying all sorts of tat and putting it on sale at vastly inflated prices as 'collectable'. "Airfix soldiers...that will be £7.99 each sir. 1970s Barbie with an arm missing and doggy teeth marks, yours for only £60 squire!". Somehow I can't see him trading for that long round my way.
I had literally thousands of matchbox and corgi cars as a kid. The sad thing is, when I got older, my parents donated all of them to the children's ward at the local hospital.
