We all knew it was coming, but it’s now official. The original Xbox Live is dead, no more, obsolete and has gone to the big microchip in the sky.
At 23:48 British Summer Time on Thursday April 15th 2010 the servers were shut down, never to be re-awakened.
Sure to go down in retro history, future generations will hear tales of epic Halo 2 firefights or how you sliced the head off a squirrel in Conker: Live & Reloaded
See, I never got into the Halo thing. I played the original and tried it online, but all it was I found was people jumping around shooting people. Call of Duty FTW ;-)
Well, actually, to be truthful...as I post this, 2 guys are still sitting playing Halo 2 online! So LIVE is still breathing, but it's definitely kicking it's very last....
I was playing Halo 2 on the 15th though, and at midnight, when everybody thought it was going to end, it was one of the weirdest and best experiences ever.
It was truly as if everybody was in some big firefight they knew they couldn't win...it felt as if I, in my gang of buddies I'd met that night and played throught the last 50 odd games with, was about to have a final standoff...
People were saying stuff like "well, this is it guys!" and "It's been a pleasure playing with you folks.."....and then, we just kept going...nothing happened! The servers kept up until early evening PST, and when they finally shut them down a few people realised that if they didn't shut their Xboxes down they could keep playing...I hung around until about 3.30am GMT, but not knowing about the servers, logged out as around one of the last 560 players or so...
Numbers have been dwindling ever since, but the last 12 were given Halo-Reach Beta codes by Gamesradar.com, in honour of them staying put ! And now, as I said only two remain.....
