On this day in 1889, Fusajiro Yamauchi founded a company that created playing cards (hanafuda to be exact), fast forward 121 years and they're a household name the world over creating some of the most critically and commercially acclaimed video games and consoles.
Nintendo has had a colourful past and in 1963 was renamed from Nintendo Playing Card Company Limited to Nintendo Company, Limited by Hiroshi Yamauchi, the grandson of Fusajiro. And for the following ten years dabbled in all manner of ventures including a taxi company, a love hotel and instant rice!
The Nintendo we all know and love however was really born in 1973 when they focused solely on entertainment, and particularly in 1975 when they focused on electronic entertainment.
