UNRELEASED VERSION OF DRAGON'S LAIR SURFACES FOR THE GENESIS/MEGADRIVE
Dirk goes dirking...

Posted by boyo on Jul 15, 2011 19:53 (315 days ago)

Dragon's Lair was a landmark title when it appeared in the arcades back in the early 1980's. With the games content on the infamous Laserdisc, the visuals and audio within the game were leaps and bounds of anything that had come before.

The game itself though was pretty basic and ultimately frustrating.

Dragon's Lair appeared on many of the home computers and consoles of the time. One glaring omission, though, was the Genesis/Megadrive port. Well it seems like the game was developed and never released, being a replica of the SNES port of the game and the guys over at Nintendoage, as part of their Summer of Prototypes 'campaign', intend to release the rom for the game very shortly.

Ah it's nice to see this one again.

I coded the Megadrive version - it was just a port from the SNES one. As far as I remember it was 100% complete.

The reason it wasn't released is because it was only a 4mb cartridge, and the powers that be decided that would count against us - being perceived as not so good, I guess.
We offered to make it 8mb and add in lots of videos, but no joy, it was cancelled.

I think it was something like a 6 week project - so at least I didn't waste too much of my time.

I always wonder why when a game has been fully developed it ends up not released. I wonder how much they'd have to sell just to break even. There wass still an MD market in '94 so it doesn't make sense to me really.

Dragon's Lair was one of the all-time greats. I once got through it all on my Xbox with Media Center. Somewhere I wrote down the final level movements. That was incredibly difficult
